Hiking experiences

The first hike in Finland

We made our first short hike to the nearby forest in January. In the snowy forest we heated hot chocolate on a stove (trangia). During our earlier club meeting, the students had listed the appropriate equipment for a short winter hiking trip. The list included snacks, drinks, seat pads, mugs, trash bags, matches, trangia and of course warm clothes.

After eating the snacks, we learned about so called Everyman’s Rights. In short, this means that in Finland people (residents and visitors) have the right to enjoy nature anywhere in the Finnish countryside regardless of land ownership. The legal concept of “Everyman’s Right” in Finland extends immense freedom to roam the environment, but comes with some serious responsibilities.

It is good to learn to move responsibly in nature at an early age. During the hike we noticed that the students were already familiar with these important rights, thanks to their families.

Ski trip

On our next club meeting, we went on a short ski trip near the school. There is a lot of snow this winter, but it's not always like this.

Tree info and snowshoe walking

Our next club meeting was about Finnish tree types. And at the end, there was a little snowshoe walk.
